Direct thermal barcode label printers use a printhead which heats the printed portion of the image onto chemically-treated paper which alters by darkening, imprinting the desired image.

This type has two particular strengths

  • Relative operational simplicity - no ribbons, just paper
  • Lower operating costs

Where relative permanence is required, however, it may not make the best option.

Relatively common, the chemical treatment is like that on the paper used in the register of a major retailer. Exposure to light or heat can eventually turn the entire surface black or dark grey, eliminating contrast.
